Director : Ritesh Menon

‘Crazy Cukkad Family’ promises a lot of fun cock-a-doodle-do, but delivers much too much cockamamie, instead.

It could very well have been a laugh-a-minute, given the theme. Old Mr Beri is in hospital, counting down the moments. In troop his children, grown up only in name. It’s not concern for a parent that drives his three sons, and a daughter (Kirkire, Punjabi, Sharma and Shukla respectively): all they are interested in is in their father’s will, and the goodies that lie therein.

A situation like this is ripe for black humour, and a sharp comedy of manners. There are moments when the film seems to get it, but then squanders the chance, and gets back to being broad and obvious. And dull.

Swanand Kirkire as the eldest son with his knickers in a criminal twist is the best of this lot: he is good to watch. Some exchanges between these dysfunctional family members make you crack a smile. There’s also an attempt at being different, in the shape of a couple of offbeat partners that the brothers and sisters possess (one lives out his fantasies in drag, the other is in a same sex relationship).

You wish more were made of these. And of the title, which is nice and snappy. Too bad the film isn’t.
