Drawing a mother’s shield — much like the one she drew around her teen sons following the untimely demise of her husband, yesteryear Malayalam superstar Sukumaran, in 1997 — actor Mallika Sukumaran has stepped forward publicly, offering her full support to her son, actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, in the ongoing Empuraan controversy. Claiming that her son has several enemies in the film industry, Mallika alleged that some insiders even attempted to sabotage the release of L2: Empuraan, fearing the further rise of the actor-director. She went one step further and even suggested that the token strike previously considered by some film organisations for March 27, coinciding with Empuraan’s premiere, was part of this scheme.

After a detailed social media post in which she asserted that neither Mohanlal nor the film’s main producer Antony Perumbavoor would say that Prithviraj had betrayed them in any way, Mallika revealed that Malayalam megastar Mammootty was the only person who reached out to her in the period of distress. She further stated that she would never forget his message of support, which he sent although he’s on a break from shooting schedules at the moment.

“Despite it being Eid eve, Mammootty messaged me. He saw my Facebook post and told me not to worry. He knows that all this would hurt me. Mammootty is an artiste with a conscience who understands that if something negative appears somewhere about my children, it would cause me distress. I will never forget this. I told my children not to forget this (Mammootty’s gesture) either. He is the only person from the industry who sent me a message with a word of comfort yesterday. When I saw his text, my eyes filled with tears,” she told Manorama News.

Although the film has already grossed Rs 200 crore worldwide in just five days, Empuraan continues to be embroiled in controversy over its content, particularly the portrayal of scenes set against the backdrop of the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response to the controversy, the film recently underwent cuts, with approximately three minutes of footage being removed from the version currently screening in theatres worldwide.
