Actor Parvathy said that she has often struggled with filmmakers who do not “appreciate” questions on set, because many of them are already dealing with a lot of “stress” related to other departments. Her experience on the recent film Thangalaan wasn’t particularly great, at least for the first week, which she dubbed as “hell” for her as well as the director, Pa. Ranjith.
The actor was in conversation with Rajeev Masand at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, where she opened up about working with directors who do not believe in communicating with their actors on set, leaving her feeling confused and anxious.
“I have worked with directors who initially did not communicate with me that they did not appreciate questions on set. It was a hard journey for both of us to figure out our equation on set. It’s important to know that it’s not like they are abandoning you, because I did go through that feeling. I have had breakdowns after shoots, feeling I am not getting him, maybe I don’t how to.
“It is also a certain validation. I don’t need the director to tell me it was a great shot–as long as I can see on their face–but I would like communication where they tell me, ‘This is where it is going wrong,'” she added.
Parvathy added that she has also seen directors go through “so much stress on set” where they are not able to handle questions and often expect actors to take care of their own performance. “On some sets, it’s us taking care of them, and on others, it’s them take care of us (actors). ”

Talking about her experience with Pa.Ranjith on Thangalaan, the actor praised his attention to detail and research as “impeccable,” but noted that they weren’t on the same page initially. “He was like, I can tell you about the brush they might have used or the soap they had, but after that can you please talk to the writers and figure it out? That was difficult initially because it was communicated a week after we started the shoot. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong, that one week was hell for him and me. We started off and then we were like, wait, are we incompatible? What’s happening? But later it was easy for me. If he gets what he wants, he says nothing and moves on to the next shot. I found the support I needed–in terms of the questions I had–in my co-actor Vikram and everyone else,” she added.
