Malayalam actor Poojappura Ravi passes away at 82

A senior thespian who appeared in about 4,000 plays and 800 films, Poojappura Ravi gained popularity for his exceptional depiction of humorous characters.

Veteran Malayalam actor Poojappura Ravi passed away at the age of 82, on Sunday. He breathed his last at his daughter’s residence in Marayur, Idukki district.

A senior thespian who appeared in about 4,000 plays and 800 films, Ravi gained popularity for his exceptional depiction of humorous characters. Ravi was born as M Raveendran Nair in Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram. He adopted his stage name under the influence of Kalanilyam Krishnan Nair, a renowned theatre figure.

According to Manorama Online, during his 11th grade, Ravi played a significant role in SL Puram Sadanandan’s play Oral Koodi Kallanayi. Encouraged by the praise he received from teachers and peers, he decided to pursue acting as a profession.

While the actor’s first appearance on the silver screen was in the film Veluthambi Dalawa, it was Hariharan’s Ammini Ammaavan (1976) that played a pivotal role in establishing Ravi’s name in the industry.

Ravi’s performances in movies such as Kallan Kappail Thanne, Rowdy Ramu, Ormakal Marikkumo, Mutharamkunnu PO, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, and Kadathanadan Ambadi also garnered significant attention.

Having been actively involved in Malayalam cinema for nearly five decades, the veteran actor’s final appearance was in the 2016 movie Guppy. Additionally, he appeared in numerous TV serials during his illustrious career.

Prominent figures from the film industry and political sphere expressed their condolences over the passing of the respected senior actor.

“Condolences on the demise of famous actor Poojapura Ravi. He entered the field of art by conquering the hearts of theatre lovers. The actor, who had a lot of fans across Kerala, entered the film world later and went on to win the hearts of people through the portrayal of comic characters. Poojapura Ravi followed an expressive acting style. His demise is a great loss to the art and culture scene. Condolences to his family and colleagues,” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote on Facebook.

Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly VD Satheesan, Culture and Youth Affairs Minister Saji Cherian, Higher Education Minister Dr R Bindu and former ministers KK Shailaja and G Sudhakaran also expressed their condolences upon the demise of Ravi.

Directors’ union FEFKA stated that his funeral will take place tomorrow. The organisation also expressed its deep sorrow over the demise of the thespian.

Ravi is survived by his children Lakshmi and Harikumar.
