The stage is set for the release of one of the most anticipated movies of 2023 — Christopher Nolan’s biographical film, Oppenheimer. Based on the life of physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, credited with inventing the atomic bomb, the 3-minute trailer gives a sneak peek into the all-star vehicle.

Produced by Universal Pictures, Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment, Oppenheimer tells the story of American theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer and his controversial Manhattan Project, a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the world’s first nuclear weapons.

“This is a national emergency,” Robert Oppenheimer says at the beginning of the trailer as he gets ready to test the first nuclear bomb. A few distorted quick shots later, the viewers are shown the name that they had been waiting to see on the screen for the past three years since the release of Tenet, “Christopher Nolan”. The trailer immediately cuts to a black-and-white shot showing Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) walking past a group of reporters and news photographers amid his voiceover in which he justifies the move to test the nuclear weapon. “We’re in a race against the Nazis, and I know what it means if the Nazis have a bomb,” he asserts.

We are soon introduced to the film’s star cast comprising Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and many others who play characters based on real-life persons and how they, in one way or the other, contributed to the Manhattan Project.

Though Oppenheimer and Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr. (Matt Damon) are shown justifying the move in the beginning, with Groves saying, “This is the most important thing to ever happen in the history of the world,” things start getting tense once Groves asks Oppenheimer the question that he should have asked long ago: “So, there’s a chance that when we push that button, we destroy the world?” They, however, go ahead with the plan since they believed it could end World War II, but what awaited Oppenheimer later was blame for giving human beings the power to destroy themselves when the world was not prepared.

Filled with jaw-dropping shots that are beautifully made with visual effects and near-to-perfect sets that one can find in Nolan movies, the film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer”, written by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema have given Oppenheimer an epic visual style, lensing with large-format film, involving Imax cameras and including stark black-and-white cinematography. The film will be released on all of the premium large formats including Imax 70mm, 70mm and Dolby Cinema.
