Thor Ragnarok is a game-changer for Marvel and these 5 reasons explain why

2. Hela’s villainess

The fearsome Goddess of Death, Hela’s character was not as developed, but since the actor was Cate Blanchett, who really cared? The intensity of her performance was a sight to behold (no doubt helped by generous dabs of Kohl around her eyes). The fighting scenes were perfectly choreographed and Blanchett amazingly made those awkward antlers look badass.

3. Immigrant Song

Honestly that Led Zeppelin’s masterpiece would make watching paint dry look interesting, but “Immigrant Song” was eminently suitable for this film not just because of catchy staccato beats, but also because of its lyrics. The lyrics have elements that actually match the setting and characters of Thor: Ragnarok from “Valhalla” to “Hammer of the Gods”. It would seem this song was made for this film. MCU movies have utilised iconic songs before (AC/DC’s “Shoot to Thrill” in Iron Man), but nothing as fitting as this.

4. Supporting actors

Thor: Ragnarok had a solid lineup of supporting actors, the lack of which has plagued MCU movies before – from Tessa Thompson’s badass Valkyrie to Tom Hiddlestron’s Loki to Karl Urban’s Skurge to Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk, the Green Goliath who finally saw some much-needed character development. And then there’s Jeff Goldblum’s hilarious and at the same time lethal Grandmaster. Like a fine wine, Goldblum gets better with age. Notable mentions: Idris Elba’s Heimdall who did not have much of a role but, as always, did well, and Taika Watiti’s own performance as Korg, a gladiator Thor meets.

5. Visuals

Like most superhero movies, Thor: Ragnarok also had a lot of use of the green screen and CGI, but thanks once again to Taika Watiti’s iron grip on the art of filmmaking and stunning cinematography by Javier Aguirresarobe, none of it seems too much. Due to self-deprecating humour that is prevalent in the film, you hardly pay attention and analyse Thor: Ragnarok. You just enjoy it.
