“Long before they became legends, Mufasa and the prince, who would come to be known as Scar, became brothers.” This is their story. Disney on Saturday dropped the much-awaited first trailer of one of the most anticipated movies of the year– Mufasa: The Lion King. A teaser was released previously.
Directed by the Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins and written by Jeff Nathanson, the film is a prequel to Jon Favreau’s blockbuster remake of the original animated film. The over two-minute long, visually stunning trailer of the sequel traces the origin story of Mufasa, an orphan who becomes the beloved King of the Pride Lands.
Mufasa: The Lion King traces the unlikely rise of the orphaned cub, as the trailer opens with Rafiki–the wise mandrill, who serves as the shaman of the Pride Lands– narrating the legend of Mufasa and Scar to Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala.
“It’s time I tell you a story, a story of a cub not much bigger than you,” Rafiki says, as Timon adds, “So just to be clear, we are not in this story?” To which Pumbaa adds, “There’s a slot of stories with all of us! Tell one of those!” teasing their trademark banter.

The story then dives into a flashback, chronicling the tale of how the orphaned cub Mufasa meets the sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline, who accepts Mufasa into his family as a brother. Together, the brothers go an adventure of a lifetime as they band together to fight against Kiros, a deadly foe. Taka eventually becomes Scar, the villainous lion who will one day go on to kill Mufasa.
Mufasa is voiced by actor Aaron Pierre, while Kelvin Harrison Jr is the voice of Taka. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen are back as Timon and Pumbaa. Mufasa: The Lion King is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 20,
