Michael Rooker, who played Yondu in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, has said that it is “terrible” that Gunn was fired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He went on to add that the filmmaker already has the DC movie Suicide Squad and is writing and directing it.

“It’s terrible, isn’t it? Yeah, but oh well, guess what? He’s on a gig already. Suicide Squad, that’s right. He’s writing it and directing it as well,” Rooker said at the Walker Stalker convention in Atlanta. It is not yet confirmed whether Gunn will direct it as well. Gunn had written the script of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, but now its future is uncertain. Marvel Studios has confirmed the movie is on hold currently.

James Gunn was fired by Disney after his old tweets resurfaced online. The tweets had jokes about things like rape and paedophilia. Hours after US conservatives brought those tweets to light, Disney ended its association with him. “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn had said in a statement.

Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, released in 2016. Although commercially a success, it was panned by critics. Excessive studio interference and post-production alterations were deemed to be two of the reasons for its failure. James Gunn seems to be just about perfect for a reinvention of the franchise since Suicide Squad itself was inspired by Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. It is not known whether he will begin from scratch or just continue the story.
