Hours after actor Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey of making sexual advances towards him 31 years ago, the House of Cards star issued an apology on Twitter, and in the same post, also announced that he now chooses to live as a gay man.

Rapp, in an interview to BuzzFeed, alleged that Spacey made a pass at him in 1986 when they were both working together on Broadway in a revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Precious Sons, respectively. At the time, Spacey was 26 years old. The Star Trek: Discovery actor said that the advances happened after a party at Spacey’s apartment. Spacey picked him up and put him on the bed, climbing on top of him. “I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually,” Rapp said.

Rapp, who plays Lieutenant Paul Stamets in Star Trek Discovery TV series, also tweeted a statement about the same. He wrote, “I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me. Everything I wanted to say about my experience is in that article, and I have no further comment about it at this time.”

Spacey began his post by praising Rapp, writing that he has a lot of respect and admiration for the actor and he is “horrified” to hear his story. Addressing Rapp’s allegation, the 58-year-old star wrote “he doesn’t remember their encounter, but if he did behave then as Rapp describes, he owes him the sincerest apology for what would have been his deeply, inappropriate drunken behaviour.”

In the second part of his statement, the actor made the revelation about his sexual orientation, saying that it is Rapp’s story that has “encouraged” him to address other things about his life. “As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose to live as a gay man,” he wrote.
