With its release only a couple of days away now, the excitement for DC universe’s first superhero ensemble film Justice League is at an all-time high. The movie stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Ezra Miller as Flash. These superheroes and some others like Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter, who might appear in the later films or make a cameo in this film, together make up the Justice League of America which is older than even Marvel’s Avengers when it comes to comics. Avengers was, in fact, the answer to Justice League.
And then there is Steppenwolf, the villain of the film. Ciarán Hinds, known for starring primarily as Julius Caesar in HBO’s Rome and Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones, plays the character although only his voice is clearly recognisable and the entire body is enhanced using CGI to make it a challenge to the Justice League.
We already know Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, but some of you might be unaware of the new additions. Also, not everybody knows just who the hell is this Steppenwolf as he is far from DC’s most famous villain. Well, we are here to help.
Aquaman: This character is played by Jason Momoa, who is by now bored of playing all-powerful characters like Conan the Barbarian and Khal Drogo. Aquaman, as the name suggests, is a hero of the seas. He carries a trident which is basically the same trident of Greek god Poseidon. He is also the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis (yes, the mythical lost city of Atlantic, from where many legends originate and after which the Atlantic ocean is named). It is not certain how powerful he is physically in the movie, but in the comics, he is said to be possessing superhuman strength. He also has the ability to manipulate water and he can communicate with marine life.
The Flash: Many of you must have seen the Grant Gustin-starrer TV series based on the character, but Ezra Miller’s interpretation of Flash looks infinitely fun. He is an under-confident young man who has not taken control of his powers. Not for nothing, The Flash is known as the fastest man on the planet. He is known to run as fast as light and uses his speed to take down baddies. The immense speed also gives him superhuman strength to take on beings physically more powerful than him.
Cyborg: Half-human, half-machine, but all superhero. That is how Ray Fisher’s character Cyborg is described in one of the promos of the movie. Cyborg, whose real name is Victor Stone, was full-human once. After an accident, his father fused him with alien technology to save him. The result is Cyborg. Cyborg can interface with any form of technology, can mould his body into different weapons. He is described as the perfect combination of the power of technology and the strength of human heart.
Steppenwolf: Now we come to the villain. Steppenwolf is dismissed by many as the fodder until Darkseid comes into the picture. Darkseid one of the most powerful beings in DC universe. He is DC’s Thanos, and the ruler of a planet called Apokolips, but Steppenwolf is still a formidable villain because he is the general of Darkseid’s armies of parademons. He is also related to Darkseid’s uncle and a harbinger of death and destruction of earth. The duo destroys planets for pleasure and earth is just another step in their quest for total domination of all reality. As seen in one of the promos, Steppenwolf is going to be more than a handful for the Justice League.
Darkseid: The Mad Titan Thanos, who is the primary antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was Marvel’s answer to Darkseid and Thanos’ very physical presence was modeled on him. Now you can imagine the force of nature Darkseid is. Now we have little evidence that Darkseid will appear in Justice League. But we do know there are a couple of post-credits scenes in the movie and we are hoping there would be a cameo of the God of Evil.
Justice League opens on November 17.
