House of the Dragon to end with season four; HBO show set to begin production on season three next year

The showrunner, however, said it isn’t confirmed yet if the third season will also be of eight episodes, like the series’ second outing. “I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from season two on.”

The new season picked up shortly after the death of King Viserys I, and showed how his daughter Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy, and wife Alicent, played by Olivia Cooke, were at war for the Iron throne. Based on parts of George RR Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon delves into the ruthless Dance of the Dragons, a tumultuous chapter in Westeros history that devastated the powerful Targaryen Empire.

The reveal of its conclusion after four season aligns with what Martin, who is also the co-creator on House of the Dragon, had previously stated on his blog that the series would take “four seasons of 10 episodes each” to flesh out its Dance of the Dragons story.
