Michelle Trachtenberg, the actress who rose to fame as a child star in Harriet the Spy before making her mark on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, has passed away at the age of 39.
Police in Manhattan responded to an emergency call on Wednesday morning and found Michelle Trachtenberg “unconscious and unresponsive.” She was “pronounced deceased at the scene,” authorities confirmed, AP reported.
“Criminality is not suspected. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing,” the NYPD said in a statement. Her death was first reported by the New York Post.
Trachtenberg began her acting career at just three years old on Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
In the early 2000s, she earned several award nominations—including a Daytime Emmy—for her role as Dawn Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She later starred in films such as EuroTrip, Ice Princess, Killing Kennedy, and Sister Cities.
Trachtenberg made her Gossip Girl debut in 2008 and reprised her role in two episodes of HBO Max’s reboot in 2023.
Her final major acting role was in 2021 as the host of the true-crime docuseries Meet, Marry, Murder on Tubi.
In 2021, Trachtenberg accused Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon of inappropriate behavior on set, supporting claims made by her co-star Charisma Carpenter, who said she had been traumatised by Whedon’s treatment.
