Frozen 2 director Jennifer Lee Frozen 2 releases worldwide on November 22.

Disney film Frozen (2013) saw Elsa being accepted by the Kingdom of Arendelle while her protective and brave sister Anna found her true love in Kristoff. Ever since the makers announced the sequel, fans have been curious to know if Elsa too will have a romantic track in the film.

The makers also shared that there were suggestions from fans who wanted Elsa to be gay. However, the filmmakers revealed that none of the suggestions were taken into consideration. In a conversation with, Frozen 2 director-writer Jennifer Lee revealed why she thinks Elsa is not ready to have a romantic relationship yet.

“We did personality tests and a lot of in-depth work looking at where they are in their lives. It was clear that she (Elsa) wasn’t ready for a relationship at all. She was still getting used to the fact that people were accepting her, and she still had so many questions about her powers,” Lee said.

Frozen 2 writer-director Jennifer Lee: Challenges were greater with the sequel

She added, “Elsa is a woman who is carrying the weight of the kingdom on her shoulders and is wrestling with this extraordinary power. It was this feeling that she is focusing on. I get a lot of suggestions on what they (fans) want us to do for the character and some of them are beautiful. But I think that if we take that (the suggestions) on, we are building it the wrong way. So we had to just see where is she (Elsa) now, what is important to her and what can she handle in her life right now.”

Jennifer Lee, who is also Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever woman chief creative officer, also spoke about the importance of diversity in the organisation.

“As a studio, being a place for incredible filmmakers to come from around the world with different stories is very important. It’s an important initiative because then I believe we tell better stories. Talent is everywhere. So, we are just working hard to create access, enable people to see themselves on the screen and make them feel, ‘Oh, I can make movies too.’ It’s a huge goal for us,” she said.
