David Yates’ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald comes out in only a couple of days. It is the 10th film in the Wizarding World based on JK Rowling’s creations. Just like Harry Potter had a dark wizard as villain, Fantastic Beasts, which will comprise of five films, has Gellert Grindelwald, the dark wizard who spread terror upon the world before Voldemort.

So who is Gellert Grindelwald? We explain.

Gellert Grindelwald studied wizardry at Durmstrang Institute (one of the schools that take part in the Triwizard Tournament, others being Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic) in northern Europe. The school was notorious for allowing Dark Arts in its curriculum. But Grindelwald, though an extraordinarily talented and brilliant student, was too extreme for even Durmstrang, and was expelled after some disturbing experiments. In 1899, Grindelwald met Dumbledore in Dumbledore’s home Godrick’s Hollow. Both were young, idealistic and brilliant and became fast friends… and more.

Dumbledore’s family history, meanwhile, was tragic. His sister Ariana, as a little girl, was tormented by three Muggle boys after they saw her practising magic. The incident traumatised her and possibly turned her into an obscurial.

Dumbledore’s father Percival Dumbledore attacked the boys and was arrested and incarcerated in Azkaban, where he lived out the rest of his life. In an explosion caused by Ariana’s out-of-control magical powers, Dumbledore siblings’ mother Kendra died.

Now, let us come back to Grindelwald. He and Dumbledore got obsessed with the Deathly Hallows, three primal objects of power — Cloak of Invisibility, Resurrection Stone and Elder Wand. Both Dumbledore and Grindelwald wanted them but for different purposes. Dumbledore wanted to get his parents back, and Grindelwald had darker purposes — to raise an army of Inferius, zombie-like creatures raised from the dead by necromancy.

The two fell out when a three-way confrontation between Albus, Gellert and Aberforth left Ariana dead. Grindelwald fled and began his ‘career’ as a dark wizard that would culminate in a titanic magical duel in 1945. But there are still three more movies to go after The Crimes of Grindelwald before this story ends, so we will not spoil it.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald releases on November 16.
