Each day brings a plausible Avengers 4 theory. And as the movie approaches closer, the theories are somehow getting darker and darker.
After hearing of a devastating theory stating that Tony Stark will either sacrifice himself or his parents in the past (the movie is most likely going to have lots of time-travel if you do not know), we now come to Thor. Chris Hemsworth’s character saw a considerable reinvention in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War took him to even greater heights when he almost took down the Big Bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos. This is of course after he made a grand entry in the Wakandan battlefield and saved everybody else.
However, according to a new theory, Thor is going to meet his end in Avengers 4. This would not come as a huge surprise since Hemsworth’s contract with Marvel ends with this film. But it would be a big blow to the character’s fans.
So in Thor: Ragnarok, Ragnarok (end of the world in Norse mythology) happened. Surtur, the fire demon, laid waste to Asgard and hopefully for Asgardians to Hela too. But in Ragnarok, Thor needs to die as well. Only then the event will meet its true completion.
The person who has come up with this theory, appropriately named Danishroyalty, says, “Ragnarok is not a one time event. In the mythology, it’s a cycle of death and rebirth, representing the cold winter and fertile spring. It has already happened, and will happen again. The gods die in a huge culling and are later reborn to start the cycle anew. I think Avengers 4 will see the completion of Ragnarok with Thor dying and/or going to Valhalla/Hel and resurrecting his people. Thus Ragnarok will be complete and Asgard will be “reborn.” This will allow them a whole new set of stories to tell for Thor and the Asgardians. And since it’s reincarnation/rebirth they can recast people or leave people dead. It allows for a completely fresh start to the franchise, which is literally what Ragnarok is.”
Indeed, Ragnarok is cyclical. Gods die and are reborn. We could have a different Thor (played by another actor) in the next phase of MCU. In Norse myths, Odin dies while fighting Fenrir (the monstrous wolf Hulk fought at the end of Thor: Ragnarok) and Thor dies while fighting Jörmungandr (which is so big it is called the World Serpent). Fenrir is already dead, and Jörmungandr has not yet appeared in the MCU. Perhaps Thanos will be its stand-in? Whatever way this theory comes true (if it indeed it comes true), this is going to be by far the biggest death in the MCU yet, eclipsing anything that happened in Infinity War.
