Shahid Kapoor has gone all out in the track, going the tapori way with an effortless style. We wanted him to do the doggie and signature step in a certain way,and he has done complete justice to it– Bosco, choreographer

Choreographer duo Bosco Martis and Caesar Gonsalves have teamed up with Shahid Kapoor after a really long time. The song Tu mere agal bagal (also known as The Doggie Song),from their upcoming film Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, has been in the news for its unique choreography and set-up.

Unique set-up: The song was shot over five days at four different set-ups,which were created in Film City.

“The original plan was to shoot the song in Cape Town, where we had already shot two songs. But we weren’t too sure about the set-up,as both of us wanted to add some variety. I requested director Rajkumar Santoshi to give us some time, and that’s when we started planning the set-up,” said Bosco.

The duo were given the song well in advance, and while listening to it,they tried to create a unique, little world filled with different characters. In the video, one can see dancers dressed up as dabbawallahs,labourers,fisher-women among others. A scarf completed the colourful tapori look that Kapoor sports in the film.

Doggie steps: Shahid Kapoor is seen doing the much-talked about doggie step while trying to woo Ileana D’Cruz. He heard the song and finished his rehearsals in two days before the shoot.

“Shahid is an amazing dancer, and his expressions have improved with every performance. He has gone all out in this track, going the tapori way with an effortless style. We wanted Shahid Kapoor to do the doggie and signature steps in a certain way,and he has done complete justice to it. The signature step involved a lot of bum shimmies, hand moves and shoulder bops,as we wanted the choreography, costumes, and set-up to gel,” added Bosco.

The choreographers clearly didn’t want to limit the song to just another location.

Bosco,Caesar and production designer Teddy had to go through more than a week of research in order to design the set-up required for the song.

After several sessions of brain-storming,they discussed the idea of creating four different sets with the director and producer Ramesh Taurani, who immediately gave the nod. “Teddy helped us with the designs, and after 10 days,we had the designs ready. It is not easy for a producer to allow four lavish sets, which includes — a European food show, construction site, dhobi ghat, and a fisherfolk village — for a single song. Luckily,Tauraniji supported the idea and didn’t think twice before going ahead with it,” added Bosco.

The hiccups: While the entire shoot went smoothly, the cast and crew faced some difficulty on the first day due to soaring temperatures, especially on the construction set-up. “It was the first day,and the climate was extremely hot. We had erected the set- up of a huge church near the helipad area in Film City.

The temperature had touched around 42 degrees, and all of us were feeling exhausted. The fact that dancers were performing bare feet with heavy costumes on a black flooring and the reflective mirrors all around added to our woes. Luckily,we managed to finish the sequence within the allotted schedule,” stated Bosco.

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is slated to release on September 20.
