Drummer Tezi Toko of Arunachal Pradesh, another sensation from the region, finished second.
“The success shows the talent in the region. It was well deserved. I cannot refrain from expressing my appreciation of your eloquent performance. The state is proud of the choir,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said in a message.
Besides Sangma, state Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and MLA R V Lyngdoh had gone to witness the grand finale of the talent show at Mumbai.
Buoyed by the success of the local boys, the festive season appeared to have set in much early as the pine city resounded with fire crackers and groups of people — some in motorcycles and some in cars – coming out on streets cheering “We did it” and “Who’s the winner,Shillong Choir”.
Special screening of the show were organised across the city and people celebrated throughout the night.
Led by Neil Nongkynrih, the Shillong Chamber Choir had created waves as they effortless sang popular Bollywood numbers of yesteryears along with flawless rendition of western chorals.
This is the second time Shillong has sung its way to the finals of a reality TV show, the first being the Amit Paul, who was crowned the ‘Indian Idol’ in 2008. Earlier in August this year,Assam’s Jeetumoni had won Zee TV’s ‘Dance India Dance’ (DID) L’iL Masters trophy. Debojit Saha (Voice of India) and Anamika Choudhury (Zee TV’s L’il Champ) from the northeast had also occupied the top slot in reality shows on previous occasions.
The Shillong Chamber Choir was formed in the year 2001 by a group of singers who wished to come together to produce a variety of music, rather than being limited to only one kind.
They had bagged three gold medals at the World Choir Games 2010 at Shaoxing (China) in the categories of sacred music, gospel music and popular music.
