“Mallika plays the ‘Nagin’ in the film and therefore she is featured prominently in the publicity material.
“My role though small gives me plenty of opportunity to display my skills as an actor and the kind of attention I received with small roles in my previous films I really don’t need to feel insecure,” Dutta said in an interview.
Dutta who debuted with 1994 film ‘Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna’ had to wait for a good decade before getting noticed in the 2004 hit ‘Veer-Zaara’ which won her a Filmfare nomination in the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category.
The actress captured audiences heart with her role of a Pakistani maid ‘Shabbo’ in the Shah Rukh Khan Preity Zinta starrer romantic flick.
While ‘Veer Zaara’ gave her a fresh lease of life it was Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Delhi 6’ that helped her break the ‘Girl Next Door’ image.
“Life changed after Veer Zaara and post ‘Delhi 6’ I have been offered characters which were earlier considered too bold for me,” said the 33-year-old actress.
Dutta, who is currently shooting for double Emmy award winning director Fred Holmes’s film ‘Heartland’ in Punjab, said that she considers herself lucky to able to work with established directors in the very beginning of her international career.
“I am lucky to be able to work with directors like Jennifer Lynch and Fred Holmes at this stage of my career.
Fred told me that I am one of the best artistes he has ever worked with, and I have been over the moon ever since,” said the actress who was born and brought up in Ludhiana.
Dutta who recently grabbed headlines for her bold act in the film ‘Monica’ said that she knows where to draw the line when it comes to on-screen nudity.
“I don’t believe in nudity just for the sake of titillation and when I do a film I keep that in mind. The scenes in Monica have been shot aesthetically and sensitively,” she said.
Dutta who shares the screen with veteran actors like Sharmila Tagore,Anupam Kher and Rajat Kapoor in her soon-to-be-released film ‘Morning Walk’ said that she has an interesting character in the film with shades of grey.
“I play Anupam Kher’s daughter in the film, and it is a complex character because my character will go to any length to get what she wants in life,” said Dutta about her character adding that her co-stars were a treat to work with.
“I have worked with director Aroop Dutta before and Anupam Kher and I have a great working relationship so it was great while shooting for the film,” she added.
