Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) loyalists are in for a lot of surprises on September 6 as the show in its seventh season has undergone an extreme makeover. For one,the prize booty has now gone seven-fold since it first made its debut on television. It’s a jackpot at Rs.7 crore. “Ab hum seventh season mein hain toh prize money seven crore hai. Dekhte hi dekhte jackpot amount badhkar, season ke saath nine crore ho jayega toh 14 crore bhi ho jayega,” quipped the iconic actor and anchor of the show,Amitabh Bachchan at a press meet for the same.

In an unexpected move by the makers of the quiz show, the familiar sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati too has got a makeover. It’s a first even from the franchise point of view. Producer,Siddharth Basu,CMD,Big Synergy Media Ltd,revealed at the launch of the show,“We have moved away from the iconic KBC set, making India the first-ever country to change the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire set worldwide.” Designed by Varsha Jain (who has earlier worked on Zee’s Buddha and Imagine TV’s Chandragupta Maurya),the standard KBC set has given way to a magnificent 360 degree multimedia stage.

Giving details,Varsha Jain reveals,“We have been seeing the same set for over a decade. So the effort was to go ahead and bring some newness to the show. But my major concern was to keep it simple, such that it doesn’t take away the attention from the game and the host.”

In order to create a better equipped set for KBC,its location was shifted from a studio in Film City to a floor in Yash Raj Studio. “YRF has better facilities,so we took full advantage of it. We have gone beyond the regular circular set to a rectangular one. This gave us an opportunity to shoot at 360 degrees than the regular 270 degrees. The 360 degrees format also made it possible to shoot in reverse angle,” explains Jain, adding that she introduced a pair of broad stripes of LED on either side of the set to bring variation to the standard colour theme of blue. “The LED lights can change colours from golden to pink to red among others,” she adds.

Apart from the grand set,new modifications have been made to the show’s signature tune composed by Sawan Dutta, who has used Indian instruments to add to its appeal.

New elements have been added to the format of the game too. For one,the contestants will be made to answer three questions for the first round — the fastest finger first. “The one who gives the most correct answers in the shortest amount of time will get a chance to go to the hot seat,” explained Bachchan, while playing mock KBC with the members of the press. Although the new season has five lifelines, only four can be used by the hot-seat contestant to reach their goal. Another change in the lifeline segment is the entry of ‘Flip the question’ and ‘50:50 lifeline’ and the exit of ‘Ask the expert’ and ‘Double dip’. A brand new lifeline called ‘Power Paplu’ has also been introduced to help contestant to revive any lifeline option they have already used.

Meanwhile,Bachchan also unveiled the Hot Seat Aapke Shehar campaign, last week. It will have KBC’s promotional van travelling to 12 cities across India starting from Surat,Ahmedabad,Jaipur,Ludhiana,Meerut,Lucknow,Varanasi,Patna,Kolkata,Nagpur,Indore and finally,Nashik. The van activity in each city will be for three days, where few lucky participants will get an opportunity to sit on the ‘Hot Seat’ and answer questions asked by Bachchan from a recorded video.

Needless to add that with the show having undergone major changes,Sony Entertainment Television is expecting KBC 7 to be a game changer for the channel, just like it did for the entertainment world when it first entered the drawing rooms with Bachchan booming,“Main Amitabh Bachchan bol raha hoon!”
