All must commit towards protecting children’s rights: Maggie

Maggie Gyellenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard launched a new housing project for abandoned children in Alibaug.

‘The Dark Knight’ star Maggie Gyllenhaal, who launched a new housing project for abandoned children in Alibaug, feels that protecting children’s rights requires global commitment.

“The street kids in Mumbai and elsewhere in the world are denied the right to a family and the right to grow up with love, security and nurturing environment that only a family can provide. Protecting children’s rights is a universal responsibility and it requires global commitment from all of us,” the 32-year-old actress said.

The Oscar-nominated actress, along with her actor husband Peter Sarsgaard,is in the city as the global ambassadors for the international charity organisation,SOS Children’s Village. The couple last evening inaugurated a children’s village in Alibaug.

After the launch, the actress along with Peter, shook a leg with school girls and boys on a Marathi song and drum beats.

SOS Children’s Village,in association with Lifestyle brand Esprit,is one of the world’s largest orphan and abandoned children’s charity organisation and it currently reaches out to 132 countries.

“Now that I have a child,I feel so much more interested in making sure that all children are as happy as they can be. I have one child and how incredibly wonderful and difficult it is to grow them up. Here at the village, one mother takes care of six-seven children. It is surprising and breathtaking to see all this,” the ‘Crazy Heart’ star said.

Both Maggie and Peter are actively involved in human rights, civil liberty and anti-poverty campaigns. “Despite the dynamic economic advances,India has enjoyed in recent times. It may be hard to accept that India has the largest population of street children in the world with at least 18 million children living or working on the streets of urban India,” Maggie said.
