To this day, Karan Johar’s directorial debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) remains one of his most celebrated films. Recently, the filmmaker revisited shooting one of the pivotal scenes of the film so quickly that his father Yash Johar and actor Shah Rukh Khan were left stunned.

In a new interview with Film Companion, Karan narrated that he shot the scene where Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul and Kajol’s character Anjali meet each other after eight years without letting the actors know that the camera was rolling.

He shared, “I explained the scene to them (SRK and Kajol) and I played a song for atmosphere. The two of them came into the frame and performed. But before the rehearsal began, I told my DOP Santosh to roll the camera. After we were done, I said cut. Shah Rukh asked, ‘Now we will do the take?’ I said, ‘No, we have rolled.’ He was surprised.”

Not just Shah Rukh Khan, even Yash Johar was stunned as his son had completed a scene, which was supposed to be shot throughout the day in a few hours. “My father was like, ‘Beta tu ghar jaa aur soja. Ho gaya na kaam (Son, you just come home and sleep). Don’t worry about anything,'” recalled Karan.

The filmmaker had a similar experience while shooting for his latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani. Complimenting his lead actors, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, KJo said, “Ranveer and Alia have such great conversational chemistry. They give each other gap when required, speak over each other when needed, two actors…so much in sync with each other, it happens only when it happens.”

It was after seeing this chemistry between the two that Karan decided to go for a single continuous shot of the scene where Rani tells Rocky why they can’t marry each other and Rocky responds, “Handle with care, I am fragile.” The scene for which the filmmaker had kept an entire day was finished by 1 pm, which meant no shoot for the rest of the day and a ‘frantic’ call from Apurva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions.

“It just happened organically, that one shot was so perfect that we were done by 1 pm. We had nothing else planned for the day. I called pack up and got a frantic call from Apurva who said you didn’t shoot the whole day. I said, ‘I didn’t need to, what should I do?'” Karan shared.
