The Allahabad High Court on Thursday acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, who were convicted by a special CBI court for murdering their daughter Aarushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj Banjade in 2008. Welcoming the verdict of the High Court, filmmaker Meghna Gulzar who brought the Arushi Talwar-Hemraj murder case alive on the silver screen with her movie Talvar said, “I feel extreme relief and gratitude. Truth has prevailed. The loss is irreparable but I am happy that truth prevailed.”

When asked if she plans to meet the parents, she replied, “I haven’t yet planned about meeting them. At the moment, I am just processing this (the court’s verdict).” Written by Vishal Bhardwaj, Talvar starred Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Tabu among others. The film was a retelling of three investigation theories behind the 2008 double murder case, in which a teenage girl and her family servant were found murdered, and her parents were convicted for the crime.

Releasing an official statement on the verdict, Vishal Bhardwaj said, “We were questioned by a lot of people when we made Talvar even though we didn’t take any sides in presenting the story and maintained as neutral a viewpoint as possible. I am overwhelmed and relieved to hear of the Talwars’ acquittal and this strengthens my faith in the Indian judicial system. However, it still pains me when I think about the precious years lost in prison and the emotional trauma that the parents had to go through, so much so that they couldn’t even mourn their own daughter’s demise.”

Neeraj Kabi who played the role of Rajesh Talwar in the movie told, “I just got to know after media people messaged me. I had no clue. But it is a wonderful news. At a human level, I feel it is beautiful to realise that two people, who were there, are now free. The moment I got to know, I felt, ‘Oh! Wow!'”

Adding to it he says, “Even when I was playing the role, there was no way to find the truth because there was so much material to process as an actor. Even though I did the part, I didn’t know which side the blame lied. Your heart said no they won’t but your brain said, they can. But I am happy they are free. I hope and pray they are completely free and can lead a normal life. Whether they are guilty or not is one thing but at a human level, this is a beautiful thing to have happened.”

When contacted actor Prakash Belawadi who played the CBI director in Talvar, he said, “We don’t know what really happened. But in my heart and guts, I always felt that the parents are innocent. Losing a young daughter itself is such an irreparable loss and the pain is immense. But today that they acquitted I’m very very happy.”

Others from the film fraternity also took to social media to applaud the decision of the High Court. Vikram Bhatt wrote, “#ArushiVerdict not surprising. Glad Talwars are out but the question remains. Who killed Arushi? The greatest mystery of all time.” Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur tweeted, “Nothing worse than parents accused of their own daughters murder. And then horrible sordid made up stories lapped up by media. Cannot imagine the pain they went through #ArushiVerdict.” Actor Kabir Bedi also welcomed the decision as he wrote, “ACQUITTED!!! Rajesh and Nupur Talwar not guilty of #Aarushi’s murder. Finally, justice prevails, nightmare ends. 🙏 #AarushiVerdict.”
