Comedian Vir Das posted a note on social media calling out Bollywood personalities for being upset about influencers walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. The comedian admitted that he “couldn’t believe” that he was defending them, but said that this kind of elitism had to be addressed. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the comedian talked about working with unknown designers and the impact attending a big event like Cannes can have on their career and brand. “Look. I work largely with new unknown designers. So I get the appeal and eyeballs that a red carpet brings. I also respect the hustle that it takes to get yourself there. It’s not for me, but I can respect the underdog energy.” He proceeded to ask people from Bollywood to stop looking down on influencers for coming into “their domain.”
Look. I work largely with new unknown designers. So I get the appeal and eyeballs that a red carpet brings. I also respect the hustle that it takes to get your ass there. It’s not for me, but I can respect the underdog energy. So all that being said….Can I just say…..’Film’…

The comedian continued, “Can I just say… ‘Film’ people who are upset with influencers at Cannes need to stop going on their podcasts and doing collabs to promote movies then. The feeling you get seeing them walk down the carpet with you in your domain is the same feeling we get listening to your lame-ass story about how you gave up sugar in their domain.” He added that the influencers might not be “as well dressed or good looking” as them but are definitely “more interesting.” This year at Cannes, influencers such as Masoom Minawala, Parul Gulati, Sakshi Sindwani, Anushka Sen, Sarah Sarosh, and Nitibha Kaul made an appearance at the festival.
Previously, the comedian made fun of the festival’s new dressing code and joked that he will not be attending this year, because he had planned to wear something very similar to what the organisers banned, “a 78-foot-long, off-shoulder voluminous nude gown”.
