Actor Vidya Balan said that playing Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in Paa wasn’t a no-brainer for her, and she took a while before agreeing to do the film. Directed by R Balki, Paa starred Amitabh as a 12-year-old with a rare condition known as progeria. In an interview, Vidya admitted that she sent the script to a couple of friends and waited for their opinion before giving her nod to the project.
She told Humans of Bombay, “I took forever to say yes to that film, because when Balki came to me, firstly I thought, ‘What kind of story is this? He’s mad’. And why would he come to me to play Amitabh Bachchan’s mother? That was the only script that I shared with a couple of my friends. Because once the initial shock had worn off, I realised that it’s a great script.”
Vidya continued, “As an actor, I wanted to jump at it, but I wanted a few people to read it tell me what they thought. And they all said, ‘My God, you must do this.’ But it took me a while to say yes. It wasn’t a calculated decision. But I was responding to my gut.” There is a large age gap between her and Amitabh. While he was born in 1942, she was born in 1979.
Also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, Paa wasn’t a blockbuster; it only made around Rs 30 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama. But it received acclaim for Amitabh’s central performance, for which he won the National Award for Best Actor.
