The sexual assault allegations against Hollywood’s popular producer Harvey Weinstein by a number of actresses from the West has created quite a stir in the world of entertainment. And after Hollywood, it is Bollywood actors who are reacting to the most bizarre scandal in the West. The recent one to speak up on the issue is Tumhari Sulu actor Vidya Balan. Matching the tone with her contemporary Priyanka Chopra, Vidya spoke about how women don’t feel safe while addressing the sexual harassment matters.
Vidya, who has established that women characters in movies can be more than just being an object of glamour, was recently asked about her take on the Harvey Weinstein episode. In response, the much sought-after actor of Bollywood told BollywoodLife.com, “You know it is quite shocking to see that Harvey Weinstein has been an abuser for so many years and no one spoke about it till the NY Times piece broke… He is one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood, someone whose work we’ve all admired but to think that even the most powerful female actors chose to keep silent on the matter for decades is a reflection of how women, however successful they maybe, don’t feel safe addressing sexual harassment.”
Just as Priyanka said as a panellist at ‘The Marie Claire Power Trip that there are a lot of ‘Weinstein’ around the world who want to take away the power of women, Vidya too said that such people exist everywhere. On being asked if she gets daunted with such people around, she says, “No, I did not give anyone that space to intimidate me or be anything but respectful towards me. But I can’t say this enough number of times that I feel I came from a privileged position where my survival did not depend on this. A lot of times girls compromise as their survival depends on it.”
However, Vidya says that she has never been assaulted sexually. She said, “If someone’s vibe made me uncomfortable, I’ve walked away from that person and the opportunity to work with him… That is my way of dealing with it. No one has ever crossed the line with me.”
