Despite being one of Bollywood’s most beloved power couples, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna have openly acknowledged that they have more differences than similarities. Akshay once joked that apart from their shared habits of sleeping early, waking up early and enjoying games like Rummy and Ludo, they have little in common. “She thinks left, I think right,” he remarked in an interview last year. Recently, Twinkle revealed that she is frequently questioned about — and often blamed for — their differing political views. She pointed out that those who raise such concerns, however, never stop for a moment to think and understand that they are both independent individuals, capable of having their own ideologies.

In her recent column for The Times of India, Twinkle, also known by her pen name “Mrs Funnybones”, took a sharp jab at such people by questioning whether people believe Akshay is a child who would follow her instructions if she told him, “Beta ji, please walk on the left side of the road, and I will give you a Frooti.”

Taking a dig at Larsen & Toubro head SN Subrahmanyan for his 90-hour work week remark, Twinkle remarked that she is among the minority of women who aren’t subjected to their husband’s gaze on Sundays. Instead, she revealed, Akshay spends most of his time glued to the TV, especially during cricket matches. The author-columnist then segued into the topic of misogyny in general, highlighting how society often finds ways to blame women for the actions and choices of the men in their lives.

Drawing parallels with other famous personalities, Twinkle recalled how John Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono was held responsible for the Beatles’ breakup. She also mentioned Melania Trump being criticised for her husband’s policies, Jill Biden facing backlash for allegedly encouraging Joe Biden to continue his campaign despite health concerns, Anushka Sharma being unfairly blamed for Virat Kohli’s cricketing slumps and Victoria Beckham facing scrutiny over some of David Beckham’s underwhelming performances.

She pointed out that whether a man gains or loses weight, is too attentive or indifferent, whether the house is tidy or messy, or whether a woman chooses to work or not — the blame always seems to fall on women as if men are incapable of making decisions on their own. Expressing her frustration over constantly being asked what it feels like to be a “star wife”, Twinkle also criticised former US President Donald Trump’s attempts to revoke recognition and visibility for LGBTQIA+ persons and eliminate birthright citizenship.
