Still from Band Baajaa Bride Season 4
Given the fact that the Indian shaadi season is in full swing, the start of the new edition of Band Baajaa Bride (BBB) couldn’t have been better timed. The popular reality show where brides-to-be are given a head to toe makeover, steered by ace Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, hasn’t made any changes to the format this season either. The only new addition is former VJ and presenter Juhi Pande who joins the team of anchors — Ambika Anand and Bharat Arora.
With a tagline that says ‘fairy tale romances deserve fairy tale weddings’, the theme echoes clearly through the show. From childhood sweethearts to college romances to love found across borders, the show packs in mushy stories. But that is not really a put-off considering the fact that the brides, grooms and their families are all real people who don’t seem to be sticking to a script.
For instance, the second episode featuring Mitalee Patil, a Mumbai girl who returns to India after a decade with her American fiancé, Nicholas, had a nice appeal. The segment where the foreigner who has poor dancing skills, tries his best to dance to a Bollywood number for his bride would have made any Mills & Boon loving girl go weak in the knees.
Adding an element of surprise, the new season has thrown in celebrity appearances too. The Mitalee-Nicholas episode saw actor Ranbir Kapoor, looking in serious need of some sleep, make a blink and you’ll miss it appearance, which frankly felt unnecessary.
To us, the viewer, the real star is the bride and in this season Sabyasachi too. The designer comes across as someone who is actually enjoying his role in the show. He speaks to the couple with such ease and familiarity and also seems genuinely excited about making the wedding outfit. Given the fact that he’s one of India’s most successful designers, viewers also get a peek into his workshop and his collections. Unlike the previous editions, the camera zooms in the designer’s workspace showing us a lesser-seen side. The dyers dipping fabric to get ‘kacchi haldi ka rang’ as Sabya put it in one episode is relatable.
On the flip side, the show progresses in a predictable format — there’s the introduction of the couple, the meeting with Sabyasachi, the spa routine, followed by sessions with the dentist. You get the drift. As always, it’s the bride’s makeover that remains the real showstopper. Those bridal outfits too are worth waiting for every week.
