When compared to Hollywood cinematic universes like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), both of which kicked off post 2008, the Indian cinematic universes are still quite few and young. They’ve all also been designed retrospectively. Rohit Shetty can be credited as the architect of the first Indian cinematic universe — the Copverse — which was announced with his 2018 Ranveer Singh-starrer Simmba, but retrospectively kicked off with his 2011 Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham.

Rohit Shetty’s copverse has earned Rs 1411 crore

Also consisting of Sooryavanshi (2022), Singham Returns (2014), and most recently, Singham Again last year, it boasts of a star-studded cast that came together in the latest instalment — Devgn, Ranveer, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, Jackie Shroff, and Arjun Kapoor among others.

All its instalments have been hits, although Singham Again and Sooryavanshi underperformed. The former, owing to competition with its fellow Diwali release — Anees Bazmee’s blockbuster horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and the latter owing to the theatrical lull post coronavirus-induced lockdown. But despite the setbacks, Shetty’s copverse has amassed Rs 1411 crore worldwide so far, as per Sacnilk.

Thamma earns Rs 205 cr worldwide, horror universe earns Rs 1500 cr

Now, Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik’s Maddock Horror Comedy Universe has managed to surpass this figure of Shetty’s copverse. The MHCU was officially launched at the trailer launch event of its latest hit instalment, Aditya Sarpotdar’s vampire comedy Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, which released in cinemas this past Diwali. It’s now earned over Rs 205 crore at the worldwide box office.

The MHCU retrospectively kicked off with Kaushik’s 2018 film Stree, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor. It was followed by Kaushik’s 2022 creature comedy Bhediya, starring Varun Dhawan, but it was impacted by the Covid pandemic. Sarpotdar’s Munjya last year turned out to be a major sleeper hit, followed by Kaushik’s Stree 2, which became the highest grossing Hindi film at the domestic box office, earning almost Rs 600 crore in India and over Rs 884 crore at the global box office.

With the addition of Thamma, the MHCU has now earned over Rs 1500 crore at the worldwide box office. Vijan’s banner Maddock Films announced this development on its social media handles with the caption, “Chanderi se chaand tak, Maddock Horror Comedy Universe ka yeh safar rahega yaadgaar hamesha. Here’s to 1500 crore moments of love and gratitude.”

Aditya Chopra’s YRF Spy Universe has Rs 3000 cr haul

Now that the MHCU has surpassed Rohit Shetty’s copverse at the worldwide box office, it still has a long way to go before it can topple the highest grossing Indian cinematic universe yet — Aditya Chopra’s YRF Spy Universe. The massive universe, despite the recent underwhelming performance of Ayan Mujkerji’s War 2, boasts of a total worldwide box office haul of over Rs 3000 crore.

The YRF Spy Universe was announced with Siddharth Anand’s 2023 blockbuster Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan. It also consists of the War franchise — Anand’s War (2019) and Mukerji’s War 2, both starring Hrithik Roshan — and the Tiger franchise — Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Ali Abbas Zafar’s Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), and Manish Sharma’s Tiger 3 (2023), all starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.
