“I have worked best when I have ruffled feathers. My whole career is about ruffling feathers of all sorts,” Taapsee Pannu said during the latest Expresso session in Hyderabad. Taapsee was discussing her 2018 film Mulk, which bravely addressed questions about terrorism and religion.

Apart from making bold choices, the Thappad actor is also known for her no-nonsense attitude. When asked if she has had to pay the price for being outspoken, she responded, “There are no free lunches. I don’t live by ‘Log kya kahege? (what will people say?)’ Because I have a family who lives like that, I don’t like that way of living. So, I like to have a life of my own. I want to be sure how I will answer to myself. I want to be sure of what I say about myself. That is how I operate with the films I do or what I say. I shouldn’t be embarrassed by what I have done and said and not be able to face myself. There is a price to pay for it.”

Talking about how she has been called difficult by people in the film industry, Taapsee said, “People call you difficult, they find you extreme. Though I don’t think I am extreme. I have always operated on ‘hate the sin, not the sinner’ and have never been bitter and I can proudly say that. I have never targeted people but have always pointed out the problem and stood against what is wrong. These days people take sides too quickly without analysing.”

Taapsee also admitted that while she has been cancelled many times, it has stopped affecting her. “I have been cancelled so many times. Now, I am used to being cancelled. It has stopped affecting me. I am still proud of what I have said – good, bad, ugly – because I know that I didn’t target anyone. That makes me sleep well. I am okay to pay the price for the person I am,” she said.

Taapsee Pannu was last seen with Shah Rukh Khan in Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki, which became the most successful film of her career. She is now looking forward to the release of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba where she is starring with Vikrant Massey and Sunny Kaushal. The film is the sequel to her 2021 film Haseen Dillruba. She will also be seen in Khel Khel Mein, where she will be sharing screen space with Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor and Fardeen Khan.
