Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has paid his respects to Brigadier Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, the army officer whose character he portrayed in JP Dutta’s war movie, Border. Brig Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, a Maha Vir Chakra awardee, passed away at the age of 78 in Mohali.
Deol was a member of the ensemble cast of the film, which also starred Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna and Jackie Shroff and others. Deol posted pictures of the Brigadier on Instagram along with the caption, “Sad to know that Brigadier Kuldeep Chandpuri passed away today. We will forever stay indebted to this great soldier 🇮🇳.”
In the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (who was then a major) and his squad defied the odds at the Battle of Longewala, one of the prime engagements in the western sector of the conflict. Due to his leadership, the Indian forces, consisting of 23rd battalion, Punjab regiment and the BSF, were able to inflict heavy casualties to the attacking Pakistani soldiers and winning the battle despite being massively outnumbered. Border, released in 1997, was critically acclaimed and was a hit film at the box office. Dutta made two more war films after it — LOC Kargil (on 1999 Indo-Pak war in the Kargil sector) in 2003 and Paltan earlier this year, which was based on the clashes between Indian and Chinese forces in 1967.
