Actor Kamal Haasan, on Saturday, expressed his views on Sudipto Sen’s controversial yet successful film, The Kerala Story. The Tamil superstar said he is against ‘propagandist films’. Sen reacted to Haasan’s comment on his film and said people who are calling the film ‘propaganda’ are those who haven’t watched it yet and by calling it ‘propaganda’ they are indulging in propaganda themselves.

The Kerala Story, which has become the second highest-grossing film of the year after Pathaan, was released in the theaters on May 5. Even before its release, the Adah Sharma starrer drew flak for its claim that over 30,000 women from the state of Kerala have been radicalised by Islamic fundamentalists. The number was changed to three after strong opposition.

Haasan, while talking to the media, at the IIFA Awards 2023 where he was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema award, was asked about The Kerala Story. He was quoted as saying by news agency ANI, “I told you, it’s propagandist films that I am against. It’s not enough if you write ‘true story’ at the bottom as a logo. It has to really be true, and that is not true.”

Recently, the film’s director, Sudipto Sen, told Hindustan Times, that he no longer bothers to react to what people have to say about his film. He also called out people for only seeing life as black or white and not grey.

He said, “Those who didn’t see it are criticising it. The same way it was not released in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. These guys didn’t see the film so they think it is propaganda. There are very stupid stereotypes in our country… life has to be black or white, they don’t know life exists in the grey.”

The filmmaker added, “A person is indulging in propaganda by calling it a propaganda film without watching it and making his opinion. What else would the words be than hypocrisy or petty! I have stopped explaining to them.”

The Kerala Story stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani. Since the release of the film, Sharma has been getting several threats but she is happy that people are turning up in huge numbers to watch her movie.
