Is it important for a husband and wife to hold on to their individuality even after marriage? How important is it for both the spouses to put an effort to keep the marriage alive? And, is it mandatory for a woman to let go of her dreams for fulfilling her husband’s dreams? Hrishikesh Mukherjee dealt with these complex questions concerning Indian marriages in his 1960 film Anuradha featuring Balraj Sahni and Leela Naidu.

Featuring Dev Anand and Sadhana, Asli Naqli had the ingredients of a pot-boiler, but it was not a brainless film, as is the norm these days with masala entertainers. The film also featured Anwar Hussain and Keshto Mukherjee.

5. Anupama (1966)

Streaming On: Shemaroo Me, Jio Cinema

Starring Sharmila Tagore and Dharmendra in the lead roles, Anupama explored the complex relationship between a father and a daughter. While the father held the daughter responsible for his wife’s death during childbirth, she too starts believing the same. To not complicate her relationship with him further, she decides to marry the man of his choice despite loving someone else. Eventually, she finds a voice, musters the courage to elope with her lover and find some happiness for herself instead of just serving her father. The film’s beauty lies in its beautifully written dialogues by Rajinder Singh Bedi.

6. Gaban (1966)

Gaban had Sunil Dutt and Sadhna in the lead role and it was a screen adaptation of Munshi Premchand’s story of the same name. In times when protagonists were projected as righteous heroes, Mukherjee portrayed Sunil Dutt as a hero with questionable morals. The film narrated the story of Ramanath (Dutt) who is made to testify against non-violent Congress workers in return for getting his theft charges revoked by the British. But are the charges against him real or was he framed?

7. Satyakam (1969)

Streaming On: YouTube

Dharmendra’s righteous character Satyapriya single-handedly fights against corruption in the post-Independence era. His honesty makes his life a struggle and his wife, played by Sharmila Tagore, also questions his obsession with truth and everything right. The film also stars Sanjeev Kumar and Ashok Kumar in pivotal roles.

8. Anand (1971)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, Shemaroo Me, SonyLIV

Rajesh Khanna’s character of Anand while suffering from cancer makes you fall in love with him courtesy his ‘live life to its fullest’ attitude and the thought ’embrace death as much as you embrace life.’ Through the film, he, along with Amitabh Bachchan, give lessons on death and life to the audience. And, mind you, it’s done in such an entertaining way that not for a second you get bored with all the life philosophy thrown at you.

9. Guddi (1971)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, SonyLIV, Shemaroo Me

Jaya Bachchan made her entry in the film industry with Guddi. With her girl-next-door role, she made her character relatable for every girl born in a middle-class family. The film was sort of a satire on the Indian film industry. In it, Jaya’s character Kusum falls in love with an actor (played by Dharmendra) and takes him for a man with superpowers. It is only later that she understands that people on the 70 mm are as humane as any other person around her.

10. Bawarchi (1972)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, SonyLIV, Shemaroo Me

Hrishikesh Mukherjee delivered a light-hearted comedy Barwachi in 1972 which later inspired 1997 film Hero No 1 starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. Starring Jaya Bhaduri and Rajesh Khanna, Bawarchi had Khanna play a cook whose actual purpose is to rob the house of his employer but he ends up solving the grievances of one of the family members, an orphan Krishna (Jaya Bhaduri) and uniting the members of the family.

11. Namak Haraam (1973)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar

Namak Haraam is a story of two friends, Somu (Rajesh Khanna) and Vicky (Amitabh Bachchan). Vicky is shown struggling between keeping his friendship with blue-collared worker Somu and his capitalist ideologies. The film was different from any other Hrishikesh Mukherjee directorial. Set in the backdrop of the rise of textile mills in Bombay, the film was more political.

12. Abhimaan (1973)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, Shemaroo Me

This 1973 Hrishikesh Mukherjee directorial was ahead of its time. It dealt with several issues which filmmakers at the time were hesitant to approach with an open mind. The ego hassles between partners, the vanity of the male protagonist which threatened the institution of marriage and the side effects of fame were among many subjects that the Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan starrer tackled. Abhimaan also featured Bindu, Asrani and AK Hangal in pivotal roles.

13. Chupke Chupke (1975)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, SonyLIV, Shemaroo Me

Chupke Chupke is an all-time favourite for many. With impeccable performances by Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Asrani and Om Prakash, the comedy-drama will lighten up a dull day and boost your spirits when you are feeling low. It has Dharmendra’s character Pyaare Mohan playing a prank on his brother-in-law who is obsessed with the purity of a language. The witty banter between him and Om Prakash is one of the high points of the comedy caper.

14. Gol Maal (1979)

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, SonyLIV, Shemaroo Me

Considered a cult comedy, Gol Maal still holds a special place in the hearts of cinephiles. Mukherjee dealt with mistaken identities in the movie and an actor as fine as Amol Palekar was like an icing on the cake. If you have enjoyed Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal franchise, you ought to watch Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Gol Maal which will leave in splits for sure.

15. Khubsoorat (1980)

Streaming On: SonyLIV, Shemaroo Me

Gulzar and Hrishikesh Mukherjee once again came together for the 1980 release Khubsoorat. To expect anything but a sensational entertainer would have been foolishness. Needless to say, the artistes didn’t disappoint. A clever and spirited girl enters the strict household of the Guptas and upsets the entire scheme of things, in turn, making way for golden comedy sequences. Khubsoorat starred Rekha, Ashok Kumar, Rakesh Roshan and Dina Pathak among others in significant roles.
