1. Vicky Donor

Streaming On: YouTube, Voot

Director: Shoojit Sircar

Ayushmann Khurrana won us over with his debut film Vicky Donor (2012). The Shoojit Sircar directorial became a game-changer of sorts and impressed cinephiles with its intelligent script and flawless execution. Not just acting, Ayushmann’s singing skills also got applauded as he crooned “Pani Da Rang” for the movie.

2. Dum Laga Ke Haisha

Streaming On: SonyLIV, YouTube

Director: Sharat Katariya

After winning over the audience with Vicky Donor, Ayushmann worked in a few mediocre films [(Nautanki Saala! (Streaming On: Hotstar) Bewakoofiyaan (Streaming On: YouTube) Hawaizaada (Streaming On: Hotstar)] and just when he was on the verge of being declared a one-hit-wonder, he signed Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The film presented him as a frustrated middle-class husband Prem Prakash Tiwari who marries an over-weight Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar) because of family pressure. With references to Kumar Sanu, cassette players and VCDs, the film invoked 90s nostalgia. Watch this one if you are looking for a light entertainer, some great performances not just by the lead actors but also by the supporting cast and good music.

3. Meri Pyaari Bindu

Streaming On: Amazon Prime Video, YouTube

Director: Akshay Roy

If you go by what critics say about Meri Pyaari Bindu, you might get confused. Film critics gave Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra starrer a mixed review. After watching it, I too was confused if I like it or is it just another good looking Yash Raj Films product with decent music. Watch it if you don’t have anything to watch and are tired of scrolling through many available options.

4. Bareilly Ki Barfi

Streaming On: Netflix

Director: Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari

Now, a poster boy of small-town cinema, Ayushmann once again struck gold with small-town romance Bareilly Ki Barfi helmed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. The film had a love triangle at the centre of its narrative but its localised treatment set it apart from other romantic comedies. Along with Ayushmann, Kriti Sanon, Pankaj Tripathi, Seema Pahwa and Rajkummar Rao proved their acting mettle. The song and dance sequences in the film gave it a Bollywood touch and its one-liners brought smiles to the audience.

5. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

Streaming On: Eros Now, YouTube

Director: R.S. Prasanna

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan revolves around Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhum Pednekar’s characters who fall in love and plan to get married. But the twist in the tale comes when the groom discovers that he suffers from erectile dysfunction. Throughout the entire duration of the film, smart writing makes you laugh while making a point on how erectile dysfunction can ruin relationships. So, it won’t hurt if you pick Shubh Mangal Saavdhan to watch over the weekend.

6. Andhadhun

Streaming On: Netflix

Director: Sriram Raghavan

If you haven’t watched Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun, you definitely are missing out on one of the best films of the decade. The crime thriller chronicles the story of a visually impaired piano player (Ayushmann) who accidentally becomes a witness to the murder of an actor. Throughout the film, the director keeps you guessing if Ayushmann’s character is visually impaired or is he pretending to be one. Even towards the end, you just end up asking questions. The film not just features Ayushmann at his best but also has Tabu in her elements.

7. Badhaai Ho

Streaming On: Hotstar

Director: Amit Ravindrenath Sharma

This one is a must-watch not only for Ayushmann Khurrana but also for Gajraj Rao, Surekha Sikri and Neena Gupta. The slice-of-life film is the story of an elderly couple getting pregnant and their elder son Nakul being disappointed with them for giving birth to his sibling at a time when they should be marrying him off. Gajraj and Neena’s pleasant chemistry and Surekha’s one-liners made critics give Badhaai Ho a thumbs up.

8. Article 15

Streaming On: Netflix

Director: Anubhav Sinha

With Article 15, Ayushmann Khurrana proved what he is capable of doing with a good script. In the Anubhav Sinha directorial, the actor portrays the role of an IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh. He convincingly brings to the celluloid the deeply rooted social evil of discrimination on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth in the Indian society. The movie might not be for those looking for typical Bollywood-ish entertainment, but it needs to be watched by those who are interested in thought-provoking cinema.

9. Dream Girl

Streaming On: ZEE5

Director: Raaj Shaandilyaa

Ayushmann, an employee in a call centre which entertains fantasies of its callers, flirts with his clients in the voice of a girl called Pooja. In her review, The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote, “There are many good ideas floating around in Dream Girl. But ideas need execution, and on that score, this film flubs it: it has so little wit and imagination that it turns all those ideas into a series of flat set-pieces. And that’s sad because it has a stand-out lead, Ayushmann Khurrana, in yet another stand-out part.”
