It was nostalgia that reigned supreme at the book launch of Smita Patil – A Brief Incandescence as actors, directors and other eminent members of the film fraternity walked down the memory lane recollecting their association with the late Smita Patil, who was seen as one of the finest actors of parallel cinema in India.
Narrating a hitherto unrevealed episode from his life, chief guest Amitabh Bachchan said, “I was in Bangalore shooting for Coolie once. Late into the night at around 2 am I received call in my hotel room. The receptionist informed me that it was Smita Patil on the line. I was shocked as I had never spoken or talked to her at such a time. Thinking that it would be important one, I answered. Smita asked me if I was alright and in good health. I answered yes and she said that she just had a bad dream about me and that’s the reason behind calling up so late in the night. The next day, I had my accident.”
Big B, who has had fond professional associations with the late actress, referred to her as a dear friend and a great human being. “She came across as a frail gentle human being. As frail as the flowers she would carry when she would come to meet me after my accident. But she was extremely strong.”
The superstar actor alas was in Mauratius when he learnt about Smita Patil’s death.
