Shyam Benegal funeral: Legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal, widely regarded as one of the greatest visionaries in Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 90 on Monday.

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal last rites: Legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal, the pioneer of the parallel cinema movement in Indian cinema, passed away on December 23. He was cremated on Tuesday with full state honours and a three-gun salute at Dadar’s Shivaji Park crematorium in Mumbai. Along with his family, many celebrities attended the filmmaker’s last rites. Naseeruddin Shah, Gulzar, Javed Akhtar among others, were teary eyed as they bid adieu to Benegal.

Several videos and pictures from the filmmaker’s last rites surfaced on social media. In a clip, Naseeruddin can be seen standing with tears in his eyes.

Many other actors and Benegal’s colleagues accompanied his wife Nira and daughter Pia in paying their last respects to the icon.Shreyas Talpade, Divya Dutta, Rajit Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Ila Arun, Ratna Pathak Shah, her son Vivaan Shah, Gulzar, Hansal Mehta, Kunal Kapoor and Anang Desai were also spotted at the filmmaker’s funeral, mourning the huge loss.

While talking to PTI at Shyam Benegal’s last rites, Gulzar said, “He hasn’t departed, we have departed from him and seen him off. He brought a revolution, he has gone with that revolution of change in cinema. Nobody else will be able to bring that wave, revolution once again. We will remember him for a long time and we will talk about him for a long to come.”

“I was a changed person after I returned from the shoot of the film. I think we will miss his talks the most. He mesmerised us whenever he used to talk. It’s a huge loss,” said Shreyas Talpade, who worked with Benegal in Welcome To Sajjanpur.
