Much before Varun Dhawan and director Shashank Khaitan collaborate on their already-announced project, Ranbhoomi, the filmmaker has revealed that they will work together on a contemporary action film.
Today, during a session at the 20th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star, Shashank shared he has been researching for the project which will deal with global terrorism.
“I am writing an action film which has pushed me to do a lot of research on the environment that the story is based in. I am trying to understand more about terrorism, about how terrorism in all the countries operate and the nexus. I’ve been doing all this research which is very nourishing as a writer,” the director said.
Shashank Khaitan who is an alumnus of the Whistling Wood Film School was one of the panelists at the session titled, ‘Film Schools: Education v Reality’.
Later, in an interview with indianexress.com, the director elaborated on the project. “This film is born out of my desire as a young kid, when I used to hold my He-Man toy in hand and GI Joe toy in the other and would make them fight. So, this film activates those memories,” Shashank said.
When asked if it would be on the lines of Mission Impossible franchise, as a media report suggested, the Dhadak director said, “We don’t know yet. I think we will have the clarity on how big or creative I want to make this once I have the script. I get all the actors, technicians and the action guys, and then see what the scale should be, how much of it should be real and how much should be CGI.”
There have been reports that Janhvi Kapoor would be cast in the yet-untitled film, which will be produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. On being asked about it, Shashank said that he would love to have Janhvi in the film but he is yet to narrate her the script.
“It would be unfair for me to comment on her behalf. I would like her to hear the part. Poor girl has no idea what I am writing. I would love to have her in the film but I would first write the script, give her the opportunity to read it and then decide for herself if she wants to be a part of it. I don’t want to boss her around, saying, ‘You have to be a part of the film’.”
Speaking about why he chose this project over Ranbhoomi as his next, Shashank said he didn’t feel prepared enough for the film.
“It’s a story I love but I think I need more time to prepare for it. It’s a really ambitious film but needs more time.”
Ranbhoomi is a period action film, which would also be produced by Dharma Productions.
