Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu got married in 2015 and for two years before they tied the knot, the couple decided to live together. While the couple believed that living together would help them understand each other, Soha’s mother and veteran actor Sharmila Tagore had a very different opinion about the arrangement.

In a conversation with actor Sonakshi Sinha and relationship expert Kasturi Mahanta, Soha recalled her mother’s warning that Kunal might lose interest in her if they lived together before getting married. She said, “Kunal and I were together for seven years before we got married. We were living together for two years before marriage.” She added, “That’s when my mother said, ‘Now he’s not going to marry you. You’ve taken away all the interest,’ and I thought, ‘Maybe she’s right.’”

Soha admitted that during their dating phase, both she and Kunal weren’t thinking about marriage too seriously. “We (Kunal and I) weren’t actually wrapped up in the idea of marriage anyway. Kunal said it wasn’t that important, and I also felt that maybe it wasn’t that important. Eventually, since it wasn’t such a big deal, we thought we might as well get married,” she further said.

In an old conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Soha had revealed another piece of advice she received from Sharmila. She said, “My mother told me many years ago, ‘A woman should look after a man’s ego, and a man should look after a woman’s emotions, and if you are able to do that, then you will have a long and successful relationship.’ A lot of people will feel like women also have egos and men also have emotions. And that’s all fair and good. But I feel like it is advice that has stood me in good stead.”

While Soha and Kunal weren’t initially fixated on marriage, Sharmila pushed her to encourage Kunal to take the step. “My mother also insisted that men need a little push – otherwise they won’t ask you to marry them,” she said.

Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu eventually had an intimate wedding in 2015. The couple welcomed their daughter, Inaaya, two years after their marriage in 2017.
