Shah Rukh Khan made a big splash in 1992, his first year in Bollywood, as he had four releases. One of those films was Dil Aashna Hai, produced and directed by Hema Malini. It was the first movie that SRK actually shot for. In a new interview, Hema recalled signing Shah Rukh for the project, and revealed that her ‘guru ma’ was the one who encouraged her to do it.
Asked about her first impression of Shah Rukh in an interview with Lehren Retro, Hema said, “He was very cute and sweet in Fauji, the TV serial. I used to watch that. That time, my script was getting ready. And for that character, I wanted somebody new. I said, ‘This boy is looking so nice, I want him only.'”
Hema Malini said that her sister got in touch with Shah Rukh Khan, who came over. They even introduced Shah Rukh to Dharmendra, her husband, who ‘loved him’. Hema said that it was her ‘guru ma’ who told her that she is about to encounter a huge star. “I said, ‘Ma, I’m making a film’. And she only gave the name Dil Aashna Hai. She said, ‘You’re getting a very big hero’. I didn’t understand, I told her we have a new hero. She said, ‘No, no, no, you’re getting a very big hero’. And he became big, no? She can see over the years, what is going to happen.”
Hema attributed a lot of her success to her ‘guru ma’, who also advised her to do the film Baghban, and proceed with her wedding with Dharmendra, even though he was already married at the time.
In her autobiography Dream Girl, Hema Malini recalled that Shah Rukh Khan signed four other films in the same week that she signed him onto Dil Aashna Hai. The movie starred Divya Bharti, Amrita Singh, Dimple Kapadia, Jeetendra and Sonu Walia. While Dil Aashna Hai didn’t do well at the box office, Shah Rukh’s other films successfully announced his arrival onto the scene. He has since emerged as one of the most enduring stars in the Indian film history.
