Shah Rukh Khan looked at Mannat during Yes Boss shoot and said he’d own it: ‘I said it to impress my co-star’
Shah Rukh Khan once recalled that during the shoot of Yes Boss, as he stood in front of Mannat, he confidently told everyone on set that he would own the house someday.
Shah Rukh Khan recently became the first Indian actor to become a billionaire, with an estimated net worth of about $1.4 billion.
Shah Rukh Khan starred in Yes Boss, a film remembered for the now-iconic song “Chaand Taare”. In it, Shah Rukh lip-syncs to the lyrics, “May I attain whatever I desire, may I win in life,” a line that, back in 1997, no one could have guessed would come to symbolize the rise of a man who would go on to become the undisputed King of Bollywood. What makes the moment even more poetic is a particular shot in the song: Shah Rukh dances in front of a sea-facing bungalow. A bungalow that would one day become Mannat, now a fortress-like landmark valued at over Rs 200 crore, visited daily by fans from across the world.
In an old interview with Farhan Akhtar while promoting My Name Is Khan, Shah Rukh revisited the memory of shooting in front of the house and publicly declaring, right on that spot, that he would buy it someday. In his typical witty style, he said: “Actually, what I always do is whenever I see something big and nice, I quickly tell my co-stars that I will buy it. Because that is the only way I can impress my co-actresses because looks seem to not work with them.”
Jokes aside, Shah Rukh Khan recalled telling everyone why the house had captured his imagination: “Yeah I do remember telling them why I liked it so much. Because I’m from Delhi, and everyone in Delhi has a bungalow, it’s not to show off, but it is what it is. We aren’t used to living in apartments or flats, and there aren’t that many in Delhi. In fact, despite coming from a lower middle class family, we had a bungalow in Delhi. So that’s why I said that if I ever buy a house in Mumbai, it should be big and spacious like this.”

Previously, Aziz Mirza, who directed Yes Boss, also recalled a moment when Shah Rukh shared his dream of owning Mannat. In a conversation with Radio Nasha, he said: “I remember, once we were shooting for a song near Cafe Seaside. Pointing at Mannat, he told me Aziz I bought this house. But, after that he had to go through many issues with the municipality and people behind the house. But, eventually, they made through it.”
Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan initially named the house Jannat after purchasing it. In 2005, they renamed it Mannat, a word that signifies a wish that comes true. The family recently vacated the iconic residence for renovation and has temporarily shifted to a luxury apartment in Pali Hill.
