Sarika gave Shruti Haasan ‘chikki balls’ to distribute on her birthday, other kids brought fancy chocolates: ‘There was no pocket money’

Shruti Haasan says people have misconceptions that her father, veteran actor Kamal Haasan, has bought her a house and a car. She said that she hasn't taken a single penny from her parents since the age of 21.

Actor Shruti Haasan, the daughter of legendary actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, has opened up about her childhood and the values that her parents instilled in her. She shared that her mother was “extra strict” with her while she was growing up, fearing she’ll be spoiled as she comes from a “big home with many cars.”

When asked if she has ever taken favours from her father or used her privilege to get work, Shruti categorically denied it. She told Pinkvilla, “No, never! The only privilege of my name, that I use, is that sometimes I go ahead in the queue at the airport.” She added, “I am too independent to do that. Mujhe ghinn aati hai aise soch ke bhi (I feel sick even thinking about leveraging my privilege).”

Kamal Haasan and Sarika’s love story is one that has been well-documented, with the two actors meeting on the sets of the 1984 film Raaj Tilak and falling deeply in love. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 2004, after 16 years together. Despite their separation, both Kamal and Sarika have continued to co-parent their daughters, Shruti and Akshara.

Shruti also spoke about her mother’s strict upbringing, revealing that Sarika never gave her pocket money and instead encouraged her to earn everything on her own. “There was no concept of pocket money. I had to earn everything. Because mummy always feared that with such a big house, so many cars, the kids will get spoiled. So she was extra strict,” Shruti said. She even shared a humorous anecdote about how her mother would send her to school with ‘chikki balls’ on her birthday, instead of fancy chocolates like her classmates. “I used to be so embarrassed. I used to be told in school, ‘we thought your father was an actor! And you got this sweet?’ It was really embarrassing. My mum was really down to earth,” Shruti laughed.

Despite being perceived as a privileged star kid, Shruti clarified that she has not taken any financial help from her parents since she started earning. “I haven’t taken a single penny from anybody since the time I was 21. So when people say that (he bought a house for her, etc) I understand why they are saying it. But that is a big misconception. If you ask my parents, I have never taken a penny from them. Whatever I am today and everything I have today, I have done it with their blessings, their name, and the wonderful people I have worked with in the industry. But everything I own, people may say that my father bought me a new car, but no I got it myself,” Shruti said, setting the record straight.
