Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a tough taskmaster and many actors who have worked with him often speak about his temperamental nature on the set. In a recent interview, when Gulshan Devaiah was asked about the same, the actor said that Bhansali might look unapproachable from far but once one breaks the ice with him, they will find that he is very passionate about his work.

“He is a very passionate man, but sometimes he expresses his passion through anger,” he said. When asked if he is moody and temperamental, Gulshan told The Lallantop, “I have not seen him being cruel but yes, he is moody and temperamental.” Gulshan then recalled how he cast in Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela. He said that he was called to Bhansali’s office and as soon as the director looked at him, he said, “‘You have a very Kamal Haasan kind of face’. He tried a couple of pagdis and he said ‘I am okay with this boy’ and he left. That’s how I was cast,” he said.

Gulshan said that he sat there wondering about the story and character he was supposed to play. “I was wondering, tell me something about the film, about the role. He said nothing. Then I met the writers Siddharth-Garima. They narrated the full script, the character and everything,” he shared.

Speaking about his experience of working with Bhansali, he said that his initial impression of the director led him to believe that actors won’t be allowed to contribute creatively on his set but that wasn’t the case. “I thought he is a perfectionist, and he wouldn’t let me contribute creatively, but that wasn’t the case. Sometimes, he would say ‘you will block on your own, tell me what you want to do’,” he recalled.

Gulshan shared that there were actors on the set who wouldn’t step out of their rooms because they were scared of Bhansali. “Some actors were scared of him. There were a few actors with me who wouldn’t get out of their rooms and they would say ‘sir will tell us what to do’. They would only say hello and good morning to him,” he said.

Gulshan concluded by saying that he really “enjoyed the whole process” because he made it a point to sit with the director on set and understand his world.
