Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was on Saturday released from the Yerawada Central Prison on a 30-day parole. Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai said Dutt was released at around 10.15 am after completing the legal procedures. Divisional commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh had granted the parole on December 6 on a surety and personal bond of Rs 5,000 each.

Dutt was earlier granted a 14-day furlough in the first week of October and had got a 14-day extension on medical grounds. A number of people had gathered outside the jail premises to protest against Dutt’s parole, claiming that actor was given special treatment. Home minister R R Patil had ordered an inquiry into this matter.

Jail authorities and the divisional commissioner however maintained that all the procedures were followed in the case. Dutt had surrendered in May after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case for illegal possession of weapons. He is currently serving the remaining 42 months of his five-year sentence.
