But despite all these, the trailer leaves us feeling disappointed.

Let’s face it. The times when Prem (Salman Khan) and his ‘prem’ aka love worked wonders on screen were 10-15 years back. But now, when we have seen Salman Khan in his ‘Dabangg’ avatar, it becomes difficult to accept the sudden change. From Chulbul Pandey to Prem?

And this is what happens when you watch the first trailer of Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ marking the return of Salman Khan as Prem. There is Salman Khan, there’s grandeur and there’s every bit of a Rajshri drama that once upon a time, promised to make the movie a blockbuster. But despite all these, the trailer leaves us feeling disappointed.

The trailer starts with a huge haveli, a female voice echoing a shloka, and girls dancing – everything typical of Rajshri films. Salman Khan enters the scene with the words, ‘Main waapis aa gaya hoon.’ Prem is back, with the same old world charm and a similar innocence.

The moment when he does a SRK-esque spreading of his arms, you get reassured of Salman’s Prem avatar enticing you back to the ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ days. And then, it dies.

Amidst the dancing girls can be seen a colourful lehenga-clad Sonam Kapoor gyrating to classical steps. She does look lovely as Maithili, but dancing is not her strength, for sure.

The two minute eight second long trailer takes us through Prem’s family, certain flashbacks and gives us a whiff of what is in store for the viewers – sibling rivalry, we guess. The family drama makes its way to the movie as soon as Salman says – “Har family mein problem hoti hai, lekin woh khushnaseeb hain, jinki family hoti hai…”

We also get glimpses of Anupam Kher, Swara Bhaskar, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepak Dobriyal in the trailer. Neil returns as a full time baddie after his negative role in Tamil movie ‘Karthi’.

The last scene of the trailer wherein Sonam lies on Salman’s lap eerily reminds one of the famous song sequence from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ which had Salman and his then girlfriend Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the main lead.

‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ has been one of the most awaited movies of this year and by that standard, the trailer misses the mark by a huge difference. The loosely packed trailer gives a hint that few aesthetically better scenes and sequences have been stacked together, in haste, to build a movie trailer.

Of course! The undying charisma of superstar Salman Khan works in the favour, but, as a whole, the ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ trailer fails to impress.
