Salman Khan, who was chosen as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Rio 2016 Olympics, has extended his warm support for the atheletes. As a gesture of appreciation, the Sultan actor will be presenting each one with a cheque of Rs. 1,01,000.

A record contingent of 121 athletes, including 54 women, are representing India at the ongoing sporting extravaganza in the Brazilian city known for its sand and sea. But unfortunately, none has been able to win a medal for the country so far.

Salman Khan took to Twitter to support the Indian contingent and also urged others to do their bit. He wrote, “As a gesture of appreciation for our Olympic athletes, I will present each one with a cheque of Rs 1,01,000. The government is very supportive of sports. Each of us can also do our bit to encourage a sports nation. I admire the work that Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) is doing to shape tmrw’s champions. And also companies like Edelweiss, Jio and others who have come forward to support the Olympics.”

Tennis ace Sania Mirza, shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, talented wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Babita and Sandeep Tomar, gymnast Dipa Karmakar are some of the well-known athletes whom the whole country has been cheering on. While Sania Mirza settled for the fourth position in doubles, shuttler PV Sindhu has reached the semi-finals of the women’s singles event at the Rio Olympics. She will next compete against Okuhara of Japan in the semifinals on Thursday. If she loses, she will play a bronze medal play-off with the loser of other semifinal.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar also showed her prowess in finals but fell short of winning the bronze medal. She was lauded by Amitabh Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan among others for making India proud with her extraordinary performance at Rio Olympics.

India now has only five day left to win that elusive medal otherwise, for the first time since 1992, it will return medal-less.
