Richa Chadha reveals she ‘opted out’ of scenes in Panga when she noticed her role in Kangana Ranaut-starrer wasn’t as ‘meaty’ as she’d been led to believe

Actor Richa Chadha, who was recently seen in the Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, spoke about working on the film Panga, and revealed that she tried to back out of the project when she noticed that it was ‘going south’. Richa has previously spoken about collaborating with actor Kangana Ranaut, whose political leanings are often seen in stark contrast to Richa’s own liberal views. Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Panga was released in January 2020, and didn’t make much of an impact at the box office.

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Richa was asked about doing a supporting role in Panga, despite having once said that in the film industry’s eyes, this could be seen as a demotion. She said, “I kind of opted out of a lot of scenes in that one, I’ll tell you… Especially towards the end. I was excited about it because I thought the film would be about female athletes, and how the choices are even more tough for them, in between having a child and…”

She continued, “Somewhere along the line, it went south, for me. So, I was like, ‘Give me a guest appearance’.” Asked if her character was more of a parallel lead when she signed on, Richa said, “I would say it had more meat, definitely… It’s not about the supporting part, the small part, the special appearance. None of that really matters to me, because I feel like I hold my own no matter where I am.” In the past, Richa has said that she agreed to do the film after hearing a ‘vague narration’. She told Indian Express, “I have never had a problem working with anyone. I get along with everyone unless they are douches and then I just hate them.”

Richa said that as an outsider in the film industry, the most difficult thing for her to crack has been ‘the ecosystem’. She said, “I was so naive. It took me a while to realise during the promotions of Gangs of Wasseypur that if I was going for an interview, I could legitimately ask for makeup and hair, or a stylist… Navigating the ecosystem, getting the right advice, figuring out what PR is.”

In Heeramandi, Richa played the tragic tawaif Lajjo, who dies after taking to drink when her lover abandons her. The series was released to mixed reviews on May 1.
