The trial of Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui, who has been accused of rape by an American research scholar, began in a fast-track court in Delhi on Wednesday with the recording of prosecution evidence. The court also dropped four witnesses, two student’s of Farooqui and two doctors, who were earlier summoned as witnesses.
The proceedings began with the counsel for the research scholar, advocate Vrinda Grover, and Public Prosecutor A T Ansari asking the court to drop the two witnesses — Poonam Girdhani and Ankit Chadha — who were students of Farooqui, and who allegedly saw the victim entering the building in which the accused resided, after she got out of a taxi.
While the prosecution had named the students as witnesses, the complainant’s counsel claimed that she had not named them in her complaint against Farooqui. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain then dropped the two witnesses and told them to appear as and when directed by the court.
Replying to the complainant’s application, Farooqui told the court that he has admitted the call detail records (CDRs) between him and the research scholar between March 1 to March 31. The accused also admitted the MLC pertaining to the medical examination of the woman and himself conducted by the two doctors.
After the admission of the MLC, the court also dropped the two doctors.
