The makers of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani released the film’s second song “What Jhumka” on Wednesday and upon the release, the audience discovered that the song carries bits from the popular retro song “Jhumka Gira Re”. Now, music composer Pritam has said that this was their way to pay ‘homage’ to one of the most popular Madan Mohan creations. While their initial plan was to only have the instrumental melody of the song, singer Arijit Singh later wanted to actually sing the song. Pritam asked his followers on Twitter as to which version they should go ahead with – instrumental or the one with lyrics.

In his note, Pritam mentioned that the entire film has many songs from the 1960s and 1970s in the background. “The entire film is an homage to those great musicians and great songs,” he shared, adding that it goes “perfectly with the script and setup of the movie”.

Explaining the addition of “Jhumka Gira Re” to “What Jhumka”, he shared, “The initial idea in the shoot mix was to use only the instrumental melody of the song for the shoot (thus there’s no lip sync by Ranveer in the hook), but later Arijit really wanted to sing the actual song in the end, and I really liked the idea.” Pritam mentioned that lyric writer Amitabh Bhattacharya only wants the instrumental melody of the song but they are “still fighting” on this.

The music composer then asked his followers, “So how do you feel? Should we just keep the ‘Jhumka Gira Re’ melody instrumental, or do you like the lyrics at the end?”

The song’s music credits on YouTube have been attributed to Madan Mohan and Pritam. For the lyrics and rap, Amitabh Bhattacharya has been credited with original lyrics credit given to Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Arijit Singh and Jonita Gandhi have given the vocals for the song.

Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra, is scheduled to release on June 28.
