Singer Abhijeet, who was arrested in July and later released on bail, says he is paying a heavy price in the Hindi film industry for being a nationalist. A Twitter user asked him about the arrest, Abhijeet replied on the micro-blogging site: “Long ago but I never asked any support from anyone, paying a heavy price in Bollywood for being a nationalist since years.”
According to some media reports, on Friday the Mumbai police confirmed that the singer was arrested last month after a complaint against him for harassing a woman journalist on Twitter.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya was arrested last month by the Mumbai police in connection with a case of abusing a woman online, said police. The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) cyber police arrested the singer and released him on bail, soon after the arrest as he was charged with a bailable offence.
The police had registered an FIR on July 14 against the singer on the basis of a complaint filed by Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon. Bhattacharya was booked under Sections 500 & 509 of the IPC as well as Section 67 of IT Act.
DCP (cyber) Sachin Patil said, “Abhijeet was arrested in July on the basis of the FIR against him for online abuse. However since it was a bailable offence, he was given bail soon after the arrest.” Menon said going by what the police told her, they confiscated Bhattacharya’s mobile phone.

“The police told me that he was arrested on July 26 and released on bail after his son stood surety for him. They also told me that the singer’s phone was confiscated and sent for forensic testing. They assured me that a chargesheet would be filed against the singer in the next few weeks,” said Menon.
