Neena Gupta recalls failing Christopher Nolan’s Tenet audition, wants to ask Dimple Kapadia how she got the role without even going to LA

Previously, Dimple Kapadia spoke about how she bagged the role. In multiple interviews, the veteran actor stated that at first, she thought it was a prank call.

In a conversation with Bombay Times, Dimple said, “I got a call for an audition, which I thought was a prank call. Why would Christopher Nolan want me for this film?” She further said that she told her nephew Karan Kapadia that someone is pulling her leg. However, Dimple, who was out of practice when it came to giving auditions, decided to give it a shot and sent across her audition video to the filmmaker.

“Then I was told, Nolan is coming to India, and I was requested to do an audition for him.” Dimple was convinced she wouldn’t bag the role, yet went to meet the filmmaker for the sake of getting a picture with him. She said, “When I got the part, I was nervous, and was wondering how do I prepare for the role. I told my mother, ‘Mom, your daughter is working with one of the biggest directors in the world.”

Later, speaking to her daughter Twinkle Khanna, Christopher Nolan said, “Sitting in the room with her and talking to Dimple, and the charisma and the poise that she has, and the depth of experience which was immediately apparent when I turned up in Mumbai with my video camera and asked her to perform a couple of scenes. I asked her to do things in different ways. Her skill and charisma were immediately apparent, and it was very much what I wanted for that character. So I was very excited to have found someone who I knew could take what I had hoped for, what I had put on the page, and take it to the next level.”

Tenet marked Dimple Kapadia’s Hollywood debut. She received positive reviews for her performance in the film. Despite releasing in the pandemic era, the film earned Rs 2220 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk. She went on to star in films like Pathaan, Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, and web series Tandav.

Meanwhile, Neena Gupta was last seen in the film Kaagaz 2. Her career saw a resurgence thanks to the Prime Video series Panchayat, and movies like Badhaai Ho, among others.
