One year can change so much.

One year can change so much. Last year on his 80th birthday,Yash Chopra,in a warm tête-àtête with his favourite leading man Shah Rukh Khan, regaled the media with anecdotes, musings and memories of his lifetime of making movies. He was all enthused about his film,’Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and though he did mention that this would be his last film, nobody took him seriously. Maybe we should have.

This year,on September 27th,his birthday was bittersweet. But it was a celebration nonetheless. Yashji’s wife Pamela turned the day into a tribute for the late director. Nine leading ladies walked the ramp and spoke about their association with the much-loved filmmaker. SRK — ever the Yash Raj hero — joined the ladies and true to his trademark wit,he shared heartwarming asides about Yashji. The funniest was the impression he did of the filmmaker when he would be narrating a romantic scene. SRK was in full form, teasing his leading ladies, drawing an exasperated chuckle out of all of them but for all his showmanship even SRK would agree that the evening belonged to Yashji’s ladies.

Anushka Sharma walked the ramp like a pro,Parineeti Chopra seemed awed by the occasion but missed her “parantha eating partner”,Preity Zinta was channeling her inner Zaara Hayat Khan,Katrina Kaif spoke about her “youngest friend” with whom she connected so well that even though he spoke in Punjabi, she could understand him. Sridevi shone in her Chandni colour,Juhi Chawla revealed that Yashji used to call her as “India’s most beautiful.” Madhuri Dixit really worked the Black saree she wore, much to the excitement of husband Sriram Nene who applauded approvingly when she came on the stage. Rani Mukerji broke down talking about her “Yash Uncle” and regretted that she couldn’t bake a cake for him on his birthday. and then there was the surprise package of the evening — Rekha. She rocked the ramp in a gold sari and danced to Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum. Lest there was ever any doubt,Rekha proved yet again that she is a rockstar. Nobody works the adas like she can. It was quite a memorable evening — to see rivals and successors like Rekha,Sridevi,Madhuri,Juhi under the same roof, within inches — it’s an image film lovers will revisit forever. Only Yash Chopra could make it happen. rest in love,Sir.
